Travel is a very special thing and one that is not easily defined. In fact one could argue it ebbs and flows, evolving along our civilization. When HandyHostel set out to amplify that special part that encapsulates the magic of traveling, the mysticism of exploration, and the immersion into present moments, we had to ask ourselves the important question, what exactly makes travel…travel?

Luckily, our team is full of tried and true world-explorers who have stayed in all types of accommodations across the globe, from hostels, to homestays, to the more eccentric types, like hidden huts and hobbit holes. Our team has experienced travel in all of its variations. So when the question of what makes travel, the travel we recognize and love, popped up, there was always only one clear conclusion: the (beyond-bed) experience.

This “experience” creates loving attachments to places or people, that we all store with us, as invisible souvenirs, after our journeys. It’s the fresh smell from a cooking class in Italy, a language exchange on the terrace surrounded by the Andes, or perhaps the lively commentary of an impromptu football game, or the sounds of a string session lit by a warm fire, surrounded with people from all over the world. All of these instances and more, are what makes travel so rich. It’s what makes traveling valuable to the traveler. And, it is what hospitality owners should invest in for their guests.

Travel is one of those rare things when more of it does not diminish its value. It’s because its investment, its high-yielding personal return, is all accomplished through the experiences we gain from going outside our comfort zone, by breaking normality. This is what makes hostel traveling a buzzing light many can not help but be attracted to. Its scrappy, spontaneous, and serendipitous moments attract people from all across the globe for its chance at a one-of-a-kind experience. With their boom over the past decades, we can and should take a lesson from them about how they manage to attract so many guests.

But this only happens when we choose to push our comfort zones. This only happens when we travelover just vacation.

Now more than ever, when mass tourism is revealing its detrimental effects of gentrifying localities, we must help put the power back into local hands, and their businesses. By connecting with others, and the places that shape them, we strengthen cultural awareness and appreciation, while also mending misconceptions. This is why we see it crucial to expand our platform from only hostels, to all types of accommodations looking to invite guests into an immersion of culture, self-expansion, and above all, the most unique experiences!
